Description:

Abstract:: The Public Land spatial data sets (shapefile) contains Public Land Survey section polygons that had mining claims recorded in the U.S. Bureau of Land Management's LR2000 database as of December 31, 2005 (from a May 4, 2006 data extraction) for the period from 1976 to 2005 in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. Data for Alaska from Alaska BLM ALIS database was extracted August 31, 2006.
Purpose:: This set of spatial databases was designed to be used with the U.S Bureau of Land Management LR2000 database. Each shapefile contains a field, MTRS, which allows linking information in the LR2000 case_tbl and case_land tables. However, it is only valid for data extracted from the LR2000 database on May 4, 2006, since the database is dynamic and new information may have been added after that date, or older information corrected. Alaska data is valid on August 31, 2006.

The Public Land Survey System (PLSS) spatial databases were obtained from the sources listed in the respective lineage. J.D. Causey processed the PLSS's removing extraneous fields and calculating a Meridian-township-range-section (mtrs) code for each polygon. A subset of the polygons were selected that corresponds to statistical data derived from BLM LR2000 mining claim records and converted to shapefile format.

Process_Description:

A field, MTRS, was added to the PLSS databases by concatenating meridian, township, range, and section information into one 18-character string. The string is in the format MM TTTTT RRRRR SSS where MM is a 2-digit number, TTTTT is township, RRRRR is range, and SSS is section for any valid Public Land Survey values. Township and range are 5 characters of the form XXXYZ where X is a numeric, Y is 0 or 2, and Z is N or S for township and E or W for range. A Y value of 2 means that the township or range are fractional township or ranges, otherwise the value is 0. Section is a 3-digit numeric. Then all fields except MTRS were deleted.

All datasets were then projected to Geographic coordinate system, NAD27 datum.

The spatial databases were attached to a list of unique MTRS values from the LR2000 database and all polygons that had a record in the LR2000 database were selected. This selection was saved as the present shapefile.

The tables XX_claim, where XX is the two character state zip code designation, is a count of the total number of active claims (lode, placer, tunnel site, and millsite) within a PLSS (Public Land Survey System) section during the year. The table contains data fields (named clm_ct_YR, where YR is a two digit abbreviation for the year beginning in 1976 and proceeding through 2005), and records for each polygon. There may be records for which there is no polygon because the spatial data used was incomplete.

The tables XX_lode and XX_placr are the same as XX_claim except XX_lode is a count only of active lode claims and XX_placr is a count only of active placer.

The table XX_total is a count of claims at the time the dataset was extracted from the LR2000 database by BLM (U.S. Bureau of Land Management). Fields include information on the case disposition (case_disp) and case type (casetype_txt). Case dispostion can be O (open) or C (closed). Case type can be LODE CLAIM, LODE CLAIMS-NAT PARK, PLACER CLAIM, PLACER CLAIM-NAT PARK, MILLSITE CLAIM, TUNNEL SITE.
