Why was the data set created?

To provide consultants, planners, and resource managers with an indication of the type and number of claims or sites, whether state or federal, which are located in a particular area.

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    Date: 2001 (process 1 of 4)
Current BLM casetype, casestatus and land status information is used to classify data extracted from federal land records which is stored in an Informix based system known as the Alaska Land Information System (ALIS). Questions about the data contained in ALIS should be directed to the Federal Public Information Center located in the Federal Building, Room 148 in Anchorage, Alaska. The telephone number is 907-271-5960 (TTY - 907-271-5969).

A routine has been established and refined over time to extract selected data and output it in a predefined format. The resulting flat file, which contains 1 record per transaction, is compressed.

The program run by BLM to extract lands status data for DNR is known as DNRDUMP. BLM's Division of Support Services, Branch of Information Technology Services, Application Services Section ( AK954), processes the data.

ADNR staff then ftp the compressed file to working space on their UNIX based network. The data is summarized by case to arrive at counts for the number of cases within each Meridian, Township, Range, Section MTRS. (Cases are state claims or sites and federal patented or selected claims.)

ADNR's data is extracted from the Land Administration System ( LAS) data warehouse to a flat file. Casetype, casestatus and land status is used to select and classify extracted data.

BLM and LAS data are processed by ADNR using SAS. Both BLM and DNR data are processed by MINFEFS.SAS. While distilling the BLM data to the section level some of the tables contained in BLMFMTS.SAS and LASFMTS.SAS are used.

The summary results create a dataset with one (1) observation per section. This dataset is related to the Section coverage in Arc/Info and used to reselect those sections containg any mining data. All attributes from the file are inserted into the coverage's polygon attribute table.

In Arc/Info (current version 7.1.1) the newly generated section level coverage is dissolved on all attributes in the coverage.

    Date: 04-Oct-2001 (process 2 of 4)
BLM extracts records from ALIS using DNRDUMP program. Data is compressed and transferred to ADNR. Please refer to the Supplemental Information.

    Date: 09-Oct-2001 (process 3 of 4)
ADNR extracts records from LAS data warehouse. Please refer to the Supplemental Information.

    Date: 09-Oct-2001 (process 4 of 4)
ADNR processes and combines data received from BLM and data extracted from LAS warehouse using SAS programs. Please refer to the Supplemental Information.

  3. What similar or related data should the user be aware of?

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

All codes are validated by the original records system. Codes are verified against an acceptable list during processing in SAS. After tabular data has been processed and converted for spatial use, maps are generated for visual comparison. These maps are compared with previous year's maps.

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

Accuracy is checked by visual review of hardcopy maps.

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

This data represents the number of claims located within a section. Please refer to the relevant plat and legal documents for more specific information about the type, status and specific location of claims or sites.

  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?

    Polygon topology present.

How can someone get a copy of the data set?
